Welcome to The Alternate Root, a great space to meet up, eat, drink and enjoy life.
Situated in friendly Uralla, New South Wales, in the historical ‘Trikett’s’ building, is where you’ll find our bustling flagship cafe.
Here at The Alternate Root we are known for the love, care and attention to detail that is put into our food and coffee and our regulars have come to expect the efficient and friendly service that our wonderful team offers. We would love all our customers to feel like they have entered our home, to feel comfortable and to be able to relax, unwind and let us take care of them for a while.
As a business, we value the importance of community and supporting local - whether it be our commitment to sourcing local ingredients where possible, supporting local musicians, artists and artisan suppliers, or being part of a wider community effort to help protect our environment through applying sustainable practices in house.
As well as running a busy breakfast and lunch trade seven days a week, Friday and Saturday night dinners have proven to be very popular and locals have also come to look forward to public, evening events such as trivia, theme nights, live music and open mic nights. We regularly host special nights like these so check out What’s On to keep up to date.
We are also delighted to offer our venue for your most special occasions, such as weddings, parties and more. Please see our Private Events page for more information or Contact Us directly.
Additionally you can now also find us at our sister cafe ‘The Alternate Root - Armidale Airport’ where you can find the same friendly service, great food and coffee.

The Journey
The Alternate Root is situated in the historic ‘Trickett’s’ Building in the main street. Built in 1908, it was originally the general store for the town. The incredible pressed metal ceiling was considered a highlight of the building and remains so today.
In 2015 the old building was renovated by locals Dean and Rachel Doran, who had a vision to create a magical cafe for locals and travelers alike.
During COVID, Berdine took on the cafe after the business had closed a few months earlier. She could see endless potential with a building like this. Co-owner Andy joined the business twelve months later after a stint working the coffee machine. Years later and still going strong!
